American Lung Association Supports $5 Million In Lung Disease Research

The American Lung Association National Research Program released its "Research Awards Nationwide 2009-2010," a report of scientists receiving support from the organization to further the study of lung disease.

"This year, we continue our Scholar Program, which highlights scientists that are considered to be among the best and the brightest investigators with great potential to impact the study of lung disease," said Norman H. Edelman, M.D., American Lung Association Chief Medical Officer. "These grants play a critical role in attracting and retaining talented scientists who are invested in improving the lung health of more than 33 million people living with chronic lung diseases."

The American Lung Association National Research Program supports basic, applied and socio-behavioral research related to lung health. Research projects that are being funded by the organization this year include:

- The Lung Association's Asthma Clinical Research Centers Network study of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its influences on asthma in kids
- Genetic factors that play a role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- The relationship between COPD and lung cancer

This year, the Lung Association has the opportunity to fund quality research with its alliance partners: Alpha-1 Foundation; Chest Foundation; LUNGevity Foundation, NTM Info & Research; and the National Sleep Foundation.

Eligible pre-doctoral students, fellows and junior faculty associated with not-for-profit U.S. institutions interested in applying for next year's awards (2010-2011) are invited to submit applications until October 21, 2009. For more information, please refer to http://www.lungusa.org/research.
