The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing is one of five nursing schools in the United States to receive designation as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing (NLN). The schools received this prestigious designation at the NLN's annual Education Summit in Philadelphia on Sept. 25.
"The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing strives to teach its students to use critical thinking, problem solving and communication to learn and adapt to the health care demands of the future," said Linda Kmetz, Ph.D., R.N., director, UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing. "It's an honor to be nationally recognized for creating an environment that enhances student learning and professional development."
The NLN established the Center of Excellence program in 2004 to recognize nursing schools that have achieved a level of excellence in one of three areas: creating environments that enhance student learning and professional development, promoting the pedagogical expertise of faculty, and advancing the science of nursing education.
The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing will carry the Center of Excellence designation for three years, at which point it may apply for continued designation. During this time, the School will be a resource to other schools seeking to move their own programs toward Center of Excellence designation.
Since 1884, the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing has been committed to preparing graduates for satisfying careers in the nursing profession. The School's registered nurse diploma program offers both full- and part-time students the opportunity to develop their skills through a strong clinical curriculum built on a foundation of humanities and behavioral and natural sciences.
