Commenting on the latest report from the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, Reducing Healthcare Associated Infections in Hospitals in England, Dr Peter Carter of the RCN said:

"This report rightly praises the hard work and dedication of healthcare staff who have made significant progress in tackling MRSA and C. difficile. The leadership and innovation of nurses has been crucial in delivering reduced infection rates and improving the quality of care for all patients.

"However, despite the reduction in MRSA and C. difficile, some existing infections are proving persistent while new ones are emerging. We now need to focus on preventing all types of infections from developing in the first place, in addition to controlling their spread. Good leadership and innovation at all levels of practice is needed to encourage a culture where excellent infection prevention is second nature to all health staff."
