Geisinger Health System was included in the 2009 InformationWeek 500, a list of companies that are leaders in their use of innovative technology. Geisinger's inclusion marks the sixth time it has appeared in the InformationWeek 500.
To qualify for the list, companies with revenue of $250 million or more must complete a rigorous application, which is reviewed by a panel of InformationWeek editors. The application measures quantitative and qualitative assessments of technological innovation. The final list of honorees included companies from healthcare, banking and financial services, manufacturing and telecommunications industries.
"We believe technological innovation is essential to success, and being included on the InformationWeek 500 is very gratifying," said Frank Richards, Senior Vice President, Information Services, Geisinger Health System. "With our electronic health records, our participation in a regional health information exchange and our MyGeisinger patient portal, we are committed to using technology to enhance our ability to provide patients with quality care and service."
Geisinger's electronic health records system, launched in 1995, is one of the most mature, fully-integrated systems in the nation with more than 3 million patients in the database. Several Geisinger leaders, including Richards, were involved in the formation of the Keystone Health Information Exchange (KeyHIE), the only operational, electronic health information exchange in Pennsylvania. KeyHIE now has 13 member organizations representing 90 individual practice sites with 345,000 patients providing authorization to access. The MyGeisinger patient portal provides patients secure online access to their medical records from home, and allows patients to schedule appointments or view lab results online.
Geisinger was also named to Hospitals & Health Networks' 2009 Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals list in July.
