McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, is recalling 21 lots of OTC (over-the-counter) medications which are sold in the USA, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and Jamaica.

The company says that this recall is a follow-up to a previous product recall announced in January 2010, which was initiated by complaints of a musty or moldy odor by consumers. This odor has been found to be associated with trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA).

The company stresses that the risk of a serious adverse event is very small.

The widening of the recall is a precautionary measure, says McNeil Consumer Healthcare, after an ongoing internal review found that some packaging materials used in the lots had been shipped and stored on the same type of wooden pallet that was linked to the presence of TBA in previously recalled lots.

This recall involves only lots produced before the January 15, 2010 recall. The company says shipments of material from its suppliers of that type of pallet were halted after that date.

People who have bought products from the lots included in this latest recall should stop using them and should contact McNeil Consumers Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement, the company announced. Instructions are available at www.mcneilproductrecall.com.
