For an estimated 22 million women in America, monthly menstrual periods are so heavy they can sap energy, cause anemia, and interfere with daily activities. These sufferers of cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) have historically been told their only options for dealing with unruly periods involved hormonal contraceptives, surgery, or pain relievers.
That is changing with the introduction of LYSTEDA(TM) (tranexamic acid) tablets, a first-line, non-hormonal therapy specifically indicated for cyclic HMB. LYSTEDA, from Ferring Pharmaceuticals, is available by prescription only.
"LYSTEDA is a new, non-hormonal, non-surgical treatment for heavy periods, and it's very unique," said Andrea Lukes, MD, Carolina Women's Research and Wellness Center and lead investigator on clinical studies of LYSTEDA. "You only take it during your period, and it has no hormonal side effects."
LYSTEDA's safety and efficacy for treating cyclic HMB were tested in a 3-cycle study of 294 women and a 6-cycle study of 187 women. Results demonstrated that LYSTEDA can reduce menstrual flow by nearly 40 percent. A wide range of patients in the clinical studies benefited from the treatment, including women ages 18 to 49 with body mass indexes of less than 25 to more than 30, and individuals with and without uterine fibroids. The tablets are taken only during the menstrual period for up to five days, and have been shown to work within the first cycle of use.
Women with cyclic HMB experience a more rapid breakdown of blood clots, or fibrinolysis, which causes excessive bleeding during menstruation. LYSTEDA works by helping restore the body's natural ability to moderate blood flow.
Many women with HMB consider their periods "normal," and don't ask their doctor about the condition. According to http://www.mayoclinic.com, some of the signs and symptoms of HMB include:
-- Heavy menstrual flow that interferes with regular lifestyle.
-- Feeling tired, fatigued or experiencing shortness of breath -- the symptoms of anemia.
-- The need to change sanitary protection during the night.
-- The need for double sanitary protection to control menstrual flow.
-- Soaking through one or more tampons or pads per hour.
-- Menstrual flow that includes large blood clots.
Women who believe they may have cyclic HMB should talk to their doctor or visit http://www.lysteda.com.

Perimenopausal bleeding
posted by Nadine on 19 Oct 2010 at 7:53 amI am 53 and am experiencing heavy perimenopausal bleeding. I got off birth control pills in 3/10 to let nature take its course. In reviewing this new drug, even though it is not hormonal, it still seems to be too dangerous to take. A man made enzyme to clot blood and taking six pills day does not seem safe. I think I will just wait this one out and hopefully menopause is right around the corner

posted by Joy on 24 Oct 2010 at 4:46 amI am 47+ and my cycles have been getting progressively heavier and more unpredictable. i.e., longer, more frequent time of heavier flow, etc. My doctor gave me a sample of 12 Lysteda tablets. I had 1 on Friday, (the first day of my cycle and typically my mildest day). My second is typically extremely heavy, with the third, fourth, fifth, and now the sixth, seventh and maybe even an eighth fluctuating between sporadic and heavy bursts, lasting a couple of hours at a time. Yesterday was my second day and it was very light, with no large clumps. Please keep in mind, I have only taken one tablet on Friday and two on Saturday. I plan to only take 2 per day for the recommended 5 days. I hope you'll at least try a low dose of it before continuing to suffer.
best thing for HMB
posted by Angela Keel on 27 Oct 2010 at 11:15 pmI just tried it this month for the first time and am elated! I suffer from a thyroid disease and am been having major problems with bleeding for YEARS! I took as directed and could not believe the difference. The bleeding and pain greatly diminished. I am thrilled with Lysteda is all I can say. My periods would last weeks, and would put me in bed for days. NO MORE!
HMB Help
posted by Nicole Michele on 12 Nov 2010 at 7:26 amI'm going to my doctor to demand she give me a sample of this drug! I have uterine fibroids that cause HMB. Recently I was prescribed the pill (seasonale). I bled for over a month straight on it so of course I stopped taking it (in August). My periods have gotten worse every month since with this past one being the worst. This week (day two of my monthly cycle) I suffered from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. I was up every 45 mins changing my pad because of heavy bleeding. I passed huge clots and multiple ones every 45 mins or so. I was sick and of work for 3 days dealing with this. No woman should have to suffer like this on a monthly basis so I will try anything at this point. I will definitely report back next month with how this drug worked for me. If you have been diagnosed with fibroids and experience heavy bleeding with clots and have tried this drug please let me know if its working for you and also any side effects you may have.
The best thing since sliced bread
posted by Phyllis J on 23 Dec 2010 at 5:26 pmI could not believe that I could ever have a normal period. I have always heard other women talking about a three day period and I thought something was wrong with them. This drug has made a difference immediately and with me only taking half the dose in the first month.
thank you
posted by Pat on 30 Jan 2011 at 5:24 pmi just want to thank who ever created this medicine. I believe that God gave you the idea because of all of us suffering women. I used to go thru hell and was so dreading my periods. I can go to work and get up and move around and even go out when I am on my period. This has improved my quality of life and helped by about 50 percent. Thank you to the man or women genius who helped us!!
Not sure if I like this pill - Lysteda
posted by kenew on 26 Sep 2011 at 8:05 amThis is my second month taking this pill. I am taking 2pills 3x a day. My bleeding is lighter at times, but at other times it's as if the pills are not working. I don't know if it is because I have at least 6-7 large fibroids. I have also noticed that my periods are more runny and water like which has created another issue all together.
significant change Lysteda
posted by jean raymond on 8 Oct 2011 at 6:20 amBeen taking Lysteda for 3 cycles now. Flow so heavy prior i was unable to stand up along w/anemia. First dose worked immediately. I now can participate in sports and don't have to schedule around my period. I had fibroids and ufe but that did not improve the flow. This drug is amazing!
