AquaBounty Technologies Inc. has developed a genetically engineered (genetically modified) salmon that reaches full adult weight much faster than ordinary non-engineered salmon. This new type of salmon, called AquAdvantage® Salmon will provide compelling economic benefit to salmon farmers, the company says. Additionally, there will be less need for ocean pens.
An FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) advisory panel is currently reviewing the submission to have this GM-Salmon approved to enter the human food supply.
A significant number of people and organizations are concerned about the impact of a genetically modified animal entering our food supply, as well as what effect it may have on the environment and future survival and viability of existing non-GM (wild) salmon.
AquaBounty Technologies has attempted to address some frequently asked questions:
Question 1 - will the GM-salmon grow much larger than existing salmon? If so, could they have an unfair advantage regarding competition for food, space and mating?
-
Answer - although the GM-salmon grows faster, it does not reach a bigger size than traditional salmon. A farmed salmon that escapes is not good at finding its own food after a life of being fed on dry pellets.
-
Answer - the Purdue study, by Muir and Howard, did not look at the AquAdvantage® Salmon. It studied the Japanese medaka, a freshwater fish which matures in 56 days and breeds throughout its life. Salmon do not mature until they are three, five or sometimes ten years old, and they only breed once in their lives. The new GM-salmon is infertile, it cannot reproduce. All the new GM-salmon are female, there are no males.
-
Answer - stringent tests which monitor the fish's sterilization process are performed on every batch of fish to make sure they are not able to reproduce.
-
Answer - the new GM-salmon produces no antifreeze proteins at all. Only the molecular switch form of the antifreeze gene is used, and this has no effect on the production of any antifreeze proteins. The levels of growth hormones in the new GM-salmon is the same as that found in wild-type Atlantic Salmon.
-
Answer - in 1986 the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) asserted jurisdiction over GM animals/fish on the grounds that the transgene and any expressed proteins affect the "structure and function" of the receiving animal analogous to the modalities of veterinary drug formulations. FDA jurisdiction has been upheld by the courts. GM-salmon are regulated by the Center for Veterinary Medicine under the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act.
-
Answer - this is governed by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the regulations implementing NEPA adopted by the Council on Environmental Quality (40 CFR Parts 1500 to 1508) and by FDA (21 CFR Part 25). The NEPA and CEQ (Council on Environmental Quality) obligations imposed on the FDA are the same as those required of all federal agencies, including assessing the environmental impact. To quote the 1998 guidance:
"FDA considers harm to the environment to include not only toxicity to environmental organisms but also environmental effects other than toxicity, such as lasting effects on ecological community dynamics."
-
Answer - yes, they are experts in the fields of biology and environmental science who have risk-assessed hundreds of cases.

If it isn't broken dont fix it.
posted by Don Mesaros on 16 Jan 2011 at 11:37 amBusiness is all about profit. Look at the mad cow disease. Cattle which are vegetarians were fed animal protein in an effort to make them grow faster ( put on more weight) The animal protein was taken from downer animals (found dead and bloated) and waste products i.e. entrails etc. These dead and possibly diseased animals were processed and fed to health animals some of which reacted adversely to this process and guess what MAD COW disease which was passed on to humans with deadly consequences. Stop messing with the food.
Why not...

don't find Aquabounty credible
posted by azure on 29 Sep 2010 at 7:26 pmWhy would anyone believe AquaBounty when they say that the females are guaranteed to be infertile and that there will be no males. Is AquaBounty willing to post & maintain a bond that is equal the value of all salmon caught for the last 10 years? No? Then clearly Aquabounty doesn't believe what it's saying either.
I am tired of the world having to accept the cost of corporations lying for profits. Monsanto, et al, stated repeatedly that 2,4,5-T was "safe". But it wasn't and is one of the few herbicides that EPA actually removed the registration of. How many drugs have been pulled off the market when proven not be as "safe" as the manufacturer claims? In this case, the gm salmon represent yet one more serious hazard threatening the native species, the ones that evolved instead of being manipulated. Why should we take the risk so that Aquabounty can profit?
As for no labeling, yes, I agree with the other commenter, why isn't the public's right to make an informed choice more important than a corporation's desire to make a profit? If people are "stupid" enough to be scared, well that's their right, isn't it?
As for the pellets, what are the pellets made from? If they're made from other fish, then this is the same farmed salmon problem all over again, it is wasteful to farm non-vegetarian fish.
Also, what pesticides, etc., are necessary when raising the gm salmon in the oh-so-sequestered (except they won't be--who will be checking to make sure they are? The FDA w/its lack of funding for inspectors? and forget trust any industry to regulate itself)? What will happen to those pesticides, etc.? Will they poison surface or ground water? Is Aquabounty posting more bonds to pay for the potential damage to water systems for that?
farmed salmon escapes
posted by bwheeler on 29 Sep 2010 at 6:45 amEscaped farmed salmon do quite well in the wild, the lakes and rivers in the south of Chile are famous for the salmon that have escaped from fish farms,
GM will never be safe
posted by Linda on 27 Sep 2010 at 5:02 amYou only have to look how GM soya has taken over, and is out of control, ruining the lives of farmers and whole countries.
Their replies only give rise for more concern. The whole idea is equivalent to battery farmed chickens, which are breeding grounds for disease, then they're pumped full of chemicals.
How can anything fed on dry pellets be nutritious? There is more than enough food for everyone, and anyone who says differently is distorting facts for profits.
I won't eat GM animals and do all I can to avoid GM plants
posted by Rebecca Winters on 26 Sep 2010 at 3:48 pmIf your genetically modified salmon is approved I will not eat any salmon anymore for numerous reasons. I do not want to see genetically modified food in the food supply period. Plants crossbreed with other non genetically modified plants. The means our entire food supply is now tainted with unknown future effects.
The animal studies are alarming. Not enough testing has been done for GM plants and for GM foods. This messing with nature will come back to bite us and may be the end of the human race and the world as we know it. It is not up to anyone to prove it is harmful, it is up to you to prove it is harmless. That hasn't been done.
Let the public decide
posted by Jeffrey on 26 Sep 2010 at 3:33 pmWe can buy organic, lean, soy substitute, sugar substitute or any number of specially labeled foods. Labeling this modified salmon is what should be done. It prevents an unfair production advantage in the wild salmon market and it allows the public to decide if they want to consume this product.
