Certain Blue Buffalo dry dog foods may have too much vitamin D in them, which could harm the pet’s health, so the company has issued a recall. The affected products include Wilderness Chicken, Large Breed Adult Chicken, and Basics Salmon – all marketed under the BLUE brand. According to the company, adding vitamin D can be good for a dog’s health, however, some samples have excessive amounts.

A dog with excess vitamin D may become lethargic, thirsty and drink lots of water, and urinate frequently. Pet owners who believe their dogs may have consumed these products are advised to check with a veterinarian.

The products mentioned above are the only ones involved in this recall, the company stresses.

Reports have come in of 36 dogs showing symptoms of excessive vitamin D in their systems after eating the dry dog foods listed in this recall. After stopping eating those products, all dogs have made a full recovery with no long-term health problems.

Blue Buffalo Company Ltd. first heard about this problem with its dry dog foods when reports starting coming in of pets diagnosed with elevated vitamin D levels after eating the products. An inspection revealed there had been a sequencing mistake by the dry ingredients supplier. The supplier had just completed a production run with elevated vitamin D for another client; these high vitamin D levels carried over to the production run for Blue Buffalo.

If you have bought any products listed in this recall, please take it back to where you bought it from for a full refund.
