WindStone Farms, the largest stand alone blackberry operation east of the Mississippi, USA, envisions a future for the blackberry in medical research for prevention and treatment of cancer.

Blackberries, the Kentucky state fruit, could prove to be the missing link in preventing or ultimately treating certain forms of cancer. Wayne Shumate and Billy Gatton Jones, owners of WindStone Farms, enthusiastically support Dr. Vincent S. Gallicchio, Professor in Clinical Sciences and Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky, in his request for funding approval to conduct the research. Dr. Gallicchio's laboratory focus has been in experimental/developmental therapeutics for AIDS and cancer research for the past 25 years.

The proposed research will test the theory that antioxidant compounds derived from blackberries rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids will improve disease outcomes and/or prevent cancer from developing when tested in an animal model of breast cancer. Specifically, the research aims to determine that the compounds derived from blackberries have anti-cancer attributes and to link these compounds to the enhancement of the anti-tumor activity of a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, doxorubicin. The research will also determine if the blackberry compounds provide preventative effects in tumor development.
