The benefits of breastfeeding infants has long been known to be the most beneficial for infants. In new research, now it may also protect the risk of sudden death syndrome, which is one of the biggest fears for parents raising youngsters. Breastfeeding appears to reduce the risk of SIDS by up to 73% in a new study released this week.
Dr. Fern R. Hauck, an associate professor of family medicine and public health at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville explains:
"Breastfeeding has many benefits for mothers' and infants' health. This study shows another important reason that mothers should breastfeed their infants, and ideally, this should be exclusive. These results indicate that breast-feeding is strongly protective against SIDS. Exclusive breastfeeding confers the most protection."
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims the lives of about 2,300 infants a year in the United States, according to federal statistics.
So here are the basic facts from the research. The study showed that for infants who received any amount of breast milk for any time period, there was a 60% reduction in the risk of SIDS. When the researchers took into account other factors such as socioeconomic status, smoking and infant sleep position, the reduction in the risk of SIDS dropped to 45%.
However, when the researchers looked at the reduced risk of SIDS among infants who were exclusively breastfed, the risk was reduced by 73%.
Although the reasons for the association between breastfeeding and the reduced risk of SIDS is unclear, there are several theories. Breastfed infants have fewer bouts of diarrhea and upper and lower respiratory infections, which are associated with vulnerability to SIDS the research states. (see link below)
Even though many Americans have the mistaken idea that today's infant formulas are nearly identical to human milk and that they are "almost as good as breast milk", that is not true at all. Formula-fed babies are sicker, sick more often, and are more likely to die in infancy or childhood. Compared to exclusive and extended breastfed babies, formula-fed babies have a doubled overall infant death risk, and 4-fold risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Peter Kinderman, a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Liverpool, who was not involved in an associated study, said it was a good piece of research with important findings:
"Positive bonding between parent and child is known to be fantastically helpful for development. This is more evidence of the importance of breastfeeding and mother-baby attachment, not just for physical health but also for the psychological development of the child."
The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, with solids gradually being introduced around this age when signs of readiness are shown. Supplemented breastfeeding is recommended until at least age two, as long as mother and child wish.
Moreover, there are benefits of breast milk to immune system at a time when infant's own immunity is still developing and the immunity the infant received from the mother is waning, which may also play a role in reducing the risk of SIDS, Hauck explained.

you missed a point
posted by Christie on 16 Jun 2011 at 4:43 pmi am by no means an experts but from my years of research and reading every little article both good and bad on breastfeeding and natural parenting i just wanted to point out one very big thing. the article states "...reasons for the association between breastfeeding and the reduced risk of SIDS is unclear" this is not entirly true but certain "baby experts" dont want new mums to know this as it wouldnt sell books. one of the major reasons breastfed babies are less likely to die of sids is because a breastfed baby wakes more often, formula is heavier and stays in the stomach for longer meaning the baby falls into a deeper sleep than they should often not waking, another reason is that most breastfed babies sleep either in their parents room or in their bed so the parents are able to respond immediately if the baby stops breathing as a newborn often will. also being close to the mother allows the baby to copy the mothers breathing cycle as they did in the womb so are less likely to stop breathing, there are many other benifits to co sleeping (either room sharing or bed sharing fall under this) that will reduce the likelihood of sids they are all basically the effects of the above points, hope that clears it for you :)
This has been known a long time in certain circles
posted by Jennifer Smith on 15 Jun 2011 at 1:40 pmThis is not new information to anyone who has been involved with breastfeeding mothers for over 25 years. La Leche League has had several articles about this over the years and mothers attending breastfeeding support groups have heard this information for years...nice to see someone is adding to the research and it will simply reinforce what breastfeeding mothers have known all along...breastmilk is for human babies and was designed for human babies for optimal health and growth...millions of years of evolution went into this...whatever one believes (God, Atheist or whatever) how could one believe that every other mammal on the planet makes the correct milk for their infants at the right time and the right amount...and somehow the human being does not???????? Mothers milk has been designed for their babies since the beginning of time...if only all mothers and their doctors understood that....
Doctors used to try and stop breastfeeding
posted by Alice on 14 Jun 2011 at 9:54 amIt's about time we have doctors actually stating the truth about breastfeeding: that it is better for babies, should be done exclusively until baby is about 6 months old, and continued until at least age 2, as long as both baby and Mom want it.
But it ticks me off because this is the same profession which ignorantly and arrogantly taught the opposite not that long ago. Even to the point of threatening Moms with losing babies if they continued breastfeeding.
It is this profession, along with the formula companies, which taught that breastmilk could not possibly provide the nourishment needed by babies, so breastfed babies would have malnutrition and other horrible consequences, and that only ignorant, stupid mothers would breastfeed.
They are why many people still now believe these things about breastfeeding.
This profession caused the illness and even death of babies through their arrogant, ignorant declarations.
Giving formula can cause problems when breastfeeding, only one of which is disrupting the supply of milk.
Doctors did things like this: telling one woman that she produced a "normal" amount of milk but the problem was her baby was a "real eater" who needed twice the amount of milk as other babies. This "baby" was a normal sized, normally hungry baby. But the mother believed the doctor, and took the normal increased demand by baby to mean she could not produce enough to feed him, and that it was good to give him foods like cereal and formula, when he was new. At best, he developed allergies.
Had I listened to the doctors, at least two of my babies would have died. One nearly died, because at first I was of course following doctors' advice. Once I did my own real research and reverted to exclusively breastfeeding, the child recovered and became healthy.
So now, without admitting to their arrogant and destructive earlier behavior, they are "experts" who believe in breastfeeding.
I guess it's better than the way it used to be.
But with anything, I'd recommend doing your own research and don't just believe whatever the "experts" say.
