Some pink Bibles, which were for sale in retail outlets since October 2011, have been recalled because it was discovered that part of their sales money went towards breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, a US family planning organization which also provides abortions. The Southern Baptist Convention's publishing arm says it is recalling the Bibles.

Commentators say the move will have no impact on abortions figures, but will hurt lower-income women who would have received free breast cancer screenings.

LifeWay Christian Resources, a seller of Christian publications and part of The Southern Baptist Convention, has stopped selling the pink Bibles. The pink-bound books are of the Holman Christian Standard Bible.

Part of the sales of these Bibles went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer charity, which said all those donations were going towards breast cancer screening. The Komen Foundation says it is disappointed with the recall.

Apparently, LifeWay received "about three dozen complaints" that Komen affiliates were sponsoring mammographies at Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood offers abortions as part of its family planning services.

Pink represents breast cancer awareness

Many products and symbols are colored pink as a gesture of breast cancer awareness, such as pink shoes, mouse pads, ribbons, etc. There used to be a pink Holman Christian Standard Bible for sale; that is, until last Wednesday.

LifeWay Christian Resources is pulling the bibles because the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which benefits from the pink Bibles' sales, has some links to Planned Parenthood. Thomas Rainer, president of LifeWay, said:

"Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood."

The Komen Foundation said all the bible money was going towards breast cancer programs only. The Foundation expressed "disappointment" at LifeWay's move. Apparently, LifeWay had pledged $25,000.

LifeWay says the Bibles will be rebound and re-used. Some blogs, such as Bound4Life and LifeNews, had accused the Komen Foundation of donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood.

The Komen Foundation has emphasized that the money which went to Planned Parenthood was exclusively for breast cancer screenings and achieved 139,000 breast exams as well as over 5,000 mammograms. 177 cases of breast cancer were identified.

Opinions on this move are divided. While some say Bible sales cannot be linked to abortions, others emphasize that the only result from this move will be fewer breast cancer screenings for lower income females, resulting in more cases of breast cancer developing undetected, and more suffering for women - it will have absolutely no impact on abortion rates.

Recently US Dept of H&HS has mandated that all employers, including Catholic schools, universities, hospitals and social service agencies must buy coverage for sterilization, contraceptives and drug-inducers for abortion for their employees WHICH VIOLATES DOCTRINAL TEACHING AS WELL AS CONSCIENCE or face a stiff yearly fine. Exceptions allowed if said services serve primarily people of the Catholic faith. That heavy-handed decision coupled with S.G. Komen decision to drop Planned Parenthood, equally shameful, is another attack on those unfortunate ones who, for whatever reason, fall outside the umbrella of decent care. Those with any sense and/or compassion on both sides are making a mistake and is hypocritical.

Cancer Screenings and the Truth

posted by redplanet on 14 Jan 2012 at 1:59 pm

I dislike fundamental know it alls as much as anyone and think they should disappear. BUT mammograms do not save people. If you think they do, read the recent NYT article on the mathematics of it all. In the end, more people die because of them then are saved. I know, I know, it is counter intuitive, makes me sound uncaring, etc. But facts are facts. Evidence is there. We really need to understand the negative impact of mammograms and overaggressive screening programs.

An organization...not God recalled the Bibles

posted by MW on 28 Dec 2011 at 1:22 pm

For goodness sakes...please stop taking shots at Christians and God for one organization (even a Christian organization) who made a organizational decision. You read the article, and know why they did it. So stop the cheap shots!! Believe me, this is a drop in the bucket for this fantastic charity.

Abortion

posted by Sharen Snyder on 27 Dec 2011 at 9:16 am

My mother was 2-3 months pregnant when she found out about me. Upon sharing her excited news with my father, he proceeded to beat her in the abdomen to kill me. Somehow I survived. If my fathe had been successful in elimination the "product of conception" would I be here to tell about it? I very much believe that abortion ends a life. And I have believed this long before i had any church/christian affiliation. It is not only the right wings that recognize and value human life.

Their Ludicrous Crusade

posted by Gekko_Hopman on 19 Dec 2011 at 5:32 am

I know why those bigots refuse to give their good money: Planned parenthood is not allowed, oh no! (according to their zealot interpretation of God) Therefore, women asking for Komen services can't share the same beliefs. Conclusion: The Philistines don't care about saving lives, they care about not giving money to other religions. Other believers must die, that's how they fell deep in their putrid heart.

All poor don't qualify

posted by Emily on 17 Dec 2011 at 5:05 pm

All poor don't qualify for medicaid. Where do you get your information? It was a breast cancer screening and mamograms, most women don't experience a real problem from these kinds of cancer until it is much to late to treat. That's why they do screenings for it. The county health department won't do free screenings until you are 45, the hospital deffinately does not do free anything. The Planned Parenthood in our side of the state doesn't perform abortions. Komen gave you numbers, what's the problem?

How Can You Make That Call?

How do you know that these people are not giving in other ways?? How can you decide how other Christians give? Would it be right for me to tell YOU how to give?

confused fools

First John says they are an agent of Satan and don't understand God, then he says there is no God. I will pray for your confusion, John.
The rest of you are so happy in your ignorance about Christianity. Because you have created what you think is God or have created an image of what you think about those who worship God, you "think" you know it all and waste your time on these posts?
The true ignorance is that you have no clue where these people are coming from in their decision, but because they are not acting the way YOU want them to, they are EEEEEEVILLLLL!!!! WOW.
The true ignorance is that you have no clue HOW this organization or Christians (who are the most generous people on earth to all races) give or spend their money.
It is as ridiculous as my saying, well, YOU ARE EVIL, BECAUSE YOU DON'T COME AND GIVE TITHES TO MY CHURCH, WHICH SUPPORTS THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES AND THE STARVING, HOMELESS AND WIDOWS. It is your choice not to, but I don't think you are "EVIL".
Get over it... all of you. You spend your lives calling us horrible, because it somehow makes you feel better about your miserable selves. We know what we're doing. We don't need your permission. And we certainly don't need to "justify" ourselves to a bunch of whining lifeless miserable folks who have nothing better to do than to complain at any chance they get about how EEEEEVILLLLLL Christians are.
Planned Parenthood is the most unethical organization around... hiding sex trafficking, hiding sexual abuse of minors, lying about the age of unborn children. If they are sooooo wonderful, why are their abortions soooo expensive???
Have a wonderful life to you all. We Christians are. Sorry you are so jealous!

Enough is enough...

posted by Adam W on 16 Dec 2011 at 9:48 am

Considering how much you know about the "poor" you must have first hand knowledge, or how else could you know so much about someone else's life? Otherwise, tone down the mindless arrogance. Let's use some facts to combat you conspiracy theory inspired ignorance. You can believe that Planned Parenthood moves funds in a deceitful way to fund an "abortion mill," but most people with an education would find that laughable. Currently, 2-3% of Planned Parenthood is abortion related. Quite the "mill." Hyperbole perhaps? You speak as if you know everything about everything. Well, abortion is legal and it is just as much a right as your ability to speak ill of it. If you don't like it, don't get one. Why do Republicans hate when the government is in their life or tells them what to do unless it is about keeping them safe, building their roads, telling people they can't have abortions or can't get married if they are gay? Fair weather fans who love to belive in some perverse seudo-fanatical ideal. I suppose you believe the rich and banks would have too much money too? Then let's revoke those tax breaks and increase their taxes, in the interest of being fair.
Also, you ignorance on medical care is astounding. Medicaid isn't free, it is reduced based on deductables, but it isn't free. Planned parenthood on the other hand often has free services. So if you really understood the "poor" (why the condescending quotation marks?!) you would know that a free service is better than paid... And you are right, hospitals can't refuse care based on ability to pay or any other standard, but this is based on emergency care! They will also still need the bill to be paid, costing someone money. I doubt you can go to a hospital and pass off cancer screeing as emergency care and they will just do it for free. You are as dull as you are poorly articulated and tasteless. I thought Christians belived they will be judged on their actions as well as unactions? Shame on these people. Jesus was much unlike the people who profess faith to him...

Not So Easy

posted by Sara on 16 Dec 2011 at 9:44 am

Getting Medicaid is not as easy as you think. I have tried. Because I am a healthy single woman with no children & I am not pregnant I do not qualify. I have used Planned Parenthood for years to take care of routine exams because I cannot afford insurance or doctor fees. They are a great organization & I am happy they exist.

Uh, wrong!

If you think a poor person can walk into a hospital and be treated, you are correct. If you think they can walk in and get a mammogram and breast cancer screening, you're stupid.

let poor women die

posted by TH68 on 16 Dec 2011 at 9:25 am

Obviously, it's more important to let poor women die of cancer. Such a Christian idea. Nice to see things haven't changed. Life is only important IN THE WOMB. Once a baby is born, no one cares.

Also to the idiots who claim that a poor woman can get "Medicaid" do some damn research. You can't get Medicaid unless you have children or are over 35. Take a gander outside your multimillion dollar home and realize how things really are.

Folks, this is why people think Christians are hypocrites. You guys need to shape up and remember what being a Christian is really about or don't bother. You're making a mockery of Christ and his teachings.

Dying in the name of God

I agree, but what now?

I agree with the move, but they now need to find away to fund low cost or free screening to fill in the gap.

error in article

posted by Mark on 16 Dec 2011 at 8:03 am

I also want to add that this author has no clue on economics and business finance. When Planned Parenthood receives money to do breast cancer screens, the money might be set aside specifically for that test. But, using the Komen money for breast cancer screens results in a freeing of money to be used elsewhere (primarily on abortions) at Planned Parenthood. To say the money from these bibles wasn't funding abortions is ludicrous and ill-informed.

upset

posted by Shannon on 16 Dec 2011 at 8:02 am

As someone who just this month lost their mother to breast cancer, I find it appalling that a Christian organization would withdraw support of a horrible disease because of where the test could be performed. Susan G Komen is one of the leading charity organizations for breast cancer. Will the publisher destroy the bibles, wasting a valuable resource in the process as well?

once again...

posted by Brent on 16 Dec 2011 at 7:50 am

...here's yet another example of christians harming society in order to advance a backward way of thinking. Why someone would want to deny a woman the opportunity to be checked for breast cancer simply because she went to a place that provide an abortion is incomprehensible to me. One would think that a true christian would want to help those in need regardless of the location.
