The use of a class of drugs called statins which treat high levels of cholesterol has been associated with increased muscle pain. The finding comes from a study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology carried out by researchers at the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of Copenhagen.

Statins are the most effective drugs for lowering bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol). They achieve this by inhibiting the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. In the Netherlands around 40 percent of the population over the age of 65 take statins, with close to 600,000 taking the medication.

One of the main side effects of statin treatment is the increased risk of developing muscle pain. An estimated 75 percent of people on the medication report symptoms of muscle pain which can lead to problems with compliance (adherence).

According to Professor Flemming Dela from the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of Copenhagen:

"A well-known side effect of statin therapy is muscle pain. Up to 75 per cent of the physically active patients undergoing treatment for high cholesterol experience pain. This may keep people away from either taking their medicine or from taking exercise - both of which are bad choices. We have now shown that statin treatment affects the energy production in muscles. We are working on the assumption that this can be the direct cause of muscle weakness and pain in thepatients."

The researchers found that patients on statin therapy had low levels of the key protein Q10 which along with energy depletion could be the main reason for the development of muscle pain. A previous study carried out by researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine found that the severity of muscle problems associated with use of statins is related to the strength or potency of the drug.

Nearly half of all patients in Denmark on statin treatment are only prescribed this drug. This means that they are solely being treated for high cholesterol and do not have any other conditions that could affect their heart:

Professor Flemming Dela adds: "The effect of statins is marginal for these patients in a previous published Cochrane analysis only 0.5% reduction in all-cause mortality was detected, indicating that for every 200 patients taking statins daily for five years, one death would be prevented. This patient group is obviously interesting in light of the side effects of statin therapy."

He concludes:

"The new study is the basis for a large planned research project, where we will focus broadly on patients undergoing statin treatment. We will look at statin consumption from a medical point of view, and will also investigate the media's influence on patients' acceptance or rejection of statins as a treatment option. Many contradictory views find their way into the public forum, and it can be difficult for patients to distinguish between fact and fiction."

The Center for Healthy Aging will is planning on carrying out research to evaluate if monitoring cholesterol levels at home makes patients feel anymore secure or not.

Article Rating: Disappointing

This article, posting in January 2013 references a Danish study with a very selective and unique cohort demographic, with minimal relation to US patients on statins.
1. This article offers nothing new - as it states only that statins seem to be related to muscle pain, but this must be studied.(!)
2. The Mayo clinic, and numerous US studies, acknowledge a relation between statin use and myalgias - and this has been an observed fact for a number of years.
Overall, this article deserves a -1 rating - Nothing new, no useful information, minimal factual content.

I was put on simvastin 40mg. the 6th of April after having three stents in LAD, LCX and RCA. I have back and leg pain from a previous old back injury. By July I was experiencing excrutiating pain in the legs; plus cramping, and feet and tingling in my hands.

I called my Cardio DR in Oct. and was told to stop the statin and use CO Q10. I still have some pain; but not as severe. I also have had shortness of breath and experience more fatigue since July which has got worse.

Sometimes; I wonder if it was worth being kept alive as now I am financially ruined and it has affected me emotionally; anxiety and a real tough time warding off the onset of depression.

Long Term Effects of statins

posted by Cabby B on 14 Mar 2013 at 11:46 am

I have not taken statins since 2008, I am still suffering side effects. I began to get breathing problems with the statins, I was then given three types of inhaler and had a terrible reaction to these.
I have now had an allergic reaction to antibiotics.
I was given a CT scan (Coronary Calcium Scan) to discover how much the Choltestrol had damaged my body my calcium score was 0.
So I would urge anyone to take the CT scan before that the tablets in the first place. My whole immune system is shot.

I believe these tablets have ruined my life.

Have been taking statins 40mg with Persantin Retard 200mg for 2 weeks only following 3 very mini strokes and have had muscle pain, cramps, headaches, no energy. I am 81 and feel 100. Before I took the pills I had 3 voluntary jobs but now find it difficult to do anything - even lying in bed is painful. I have now stopped taking the statins.

bad medicine - statins

posted by Dale on 12 Mar 2013 at 4:43 pm

Hi. I am an Australian 51yr old male. I have taken Crestor for approx 8 years. I initialy complained to Drs that the medication was doing odd things to my heart but they said to keep using them.

Over the years i have continual heel pain left buttock pain burning and numbness in both hands and feet, chronic fatigue , depression, muscle wastage in left bicept and left shoulder pain, severe brain fog, electrical shock like pain in various parts of my body, bladder and bowel peristalis problems and tinnitus.

i have seen neuroligsts and a rheumatoligist and seem to have acquired a auto-immune response that cannot be diagnosed. I begged them to investigate the statin effects from the beginning and have been given the cold shoulder and the denial of such an occurrence by the medical professionals.

Recently i changed my diet and within 20 days lowered my cholesterol to acceptable levels. I have no taken statins for 6 weeks and the symptoms remain and seem to be esculating to the point i find it difficult to work and my brain is slow to function. I was a healthy and extremely fit person before i let myself be conned into taken neuro-toxins called statins. Please beware of the effects that are slow to progress but add up to a total shutdown and cell death of the individual.

If you take statins you should be taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement. This has been common knowledge for several years.

Statins and muscle pain

posted by linda connaughton on 7 Jan 2013 at 12:40 pm

hi if you want to post a question to me i will answer ,my pain from taking statins was my knees and elbows the bones hurt when i carried things then they began hurting all the time till i stopped taking statins.
i had swelling to my knees and ankles which then i was given meloxicam as well as statins to stop the swelling ,so i stopped the statins once more .
Itried just with a diet to keep my whole lipid profile down but couldnt i needed medicines .
I went back on statins pravastatin but they made me depressed ,crying ,i have lost the shaping in my thighs ,my muscles on my arms started to hurt and still my specialist said statins arent to blame .
But with the help of my doctor we are seeing a neuroligist to see if the statins are to blame for what is happening ,but in the meantime i am off statins but taking policosanol with coq10 .
Coq10 i believe should be taken with statins as statins reduce coq10 in your body .

posted by Danny on 5 Jan 2013 at 8:21 am

I have been taking statins since I had a heart attack. I started developing muscle pain all over. I had severe muscle pain and severe night cramps in my calfs of my legs. I changed to a lower dose and the pain was not as bad but was was still a pain that bothered me all the time. Right now Iam looking for options so I can get off of these statins. Even low dose still caused some muscle pain.

Q10

posted by James G on 5 Jan 2013 at 5:45 am

Q10 as stated in this article is incorrectly called a protein. Q10 is a low molecular weight cofactor that is synthesized from the same building blocks as cholesterol. Statins inhibit the formation of Q10 as well as cholesterol. Because Q10 is required for normal energy metabolism, a deficiency of Q10 in muscle (or whatever tissue) results in impaired energy metabolism and potential side effects of statin drugs.
