Authorities announced yesterday that next year there will be a 13% increase on the Basic Medicare Premium, this will bring the monthly contributions to $88.50 per month, or $1062 per year. Add to this a monthly contribution of $32 for the new prescription drug benefit, which many beneficiaries will have to pay, bringing the total to a monthly premium of $120 ($1440 per year).

Basic premiums have gone up each year:

2006 - $88.50
2005 - $78.20
2004 - $66.60
2003 - $58.70
A 50% increase over a 3-year-period.

According to doctors, the reason why Medicare is costing more is a result of recent breakthroughs in research, new medicines, new technology. They also say that the government's drive for more screenings has resulted in higher costs.
