Genentech Inc decided not to enrol any more volunteers into its study of Avastin for the treatment of ovarian cancer because more people than they had expected had experienced gastrointestinal perforations - the suspension happened after the company met with the FDA.
Our of 44 patients on the trial, five had gastrointestinal perforations. Gastrointestinal perforation is a possible side effect of using this drug. However, Genentech said the number of people experiencing this side effect was higher than they had expected.
Genentech had hoped for 53 trial participants. Those who are already in the trial can decide for themselves whether they want to carry on, or not.
Avasting is currently used for the treatment of advanced colon cancer. Researchers at Genentech are hoping it may prove effective in the treatment of other cancers, such as kidney, prostate, pancreas and ovary.
