The Nobel Prize for Medicine went to two Australian scientists who discovered the bacterium that causes inflammation of the stomach and ulcers of the stomach. The researchers are called Barry Marshall and Robin Warren.
They demonstrated that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori plays a crucial role in the development of both stomach and intestinal ulcers.
Thanks to their discovery both conditions can now be cured with a short-term course of antibiotics.
It was believed that stomach ulcers were mainly stress related. These two scientists proved and showed that Helicobacter pylori causes over 90% of intestinal ulcers and nearly 80% of stomach ulcers.

posted by R. Van der Hope on 8 Oct 2005 at 2:21 amCongratulations for my compatriots. However, this begs the question - what activates the bacteria - what are the environmental triggers such as diet and lifestyle. Consider the work of Claude Bernard, and Pierre Bechamp - the forgotten scientists. Are we now going to prescribe more antibiotics instead of considering the real cause of the ulcers ?
