Sales of German pharmaceutical company Schering's oral contraceptive Yasmin -- the best-selling contraceptive worldwide -- increased 34% to $198.2 million in the third quarter of 2005, compared with the same time period in 2004, and helped the company obtain a 30% worldwide market share for contraceptives, AFX/Forbes reports (AFX/Forbes, 10/24). Sales of Yasmin helped the company record a third-quarter profit of $192.2 million, compared with a $150 million profit during the same period last year (AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 10/24). Schering said that Yasmin now has a 13% market share in the U.S. (Shankar, Reuters, 10/24). The company recorded $101 million in third-quarter U.S. sales of Yasmin, a 28% increase over last year (Schering release, 10/24). WestLB analyst Andreas Theisen said Yasmin "strongly outperformed" WestLB's sales forecast (Reuters, 10/24).
