Health care professionals around the world are encouraged by news coming from Turkey that, with good medical attention, the H5N1 bird flu virus strain may not be as deadly for humans as first thought.

A hospital in the Turkish capital, Ankara, has just released two toddlers who had been infected with bird flu (H5N1). They have made a full recovery. Another child is getting better and will soon be released as well (same hospital).

Of the 21 cases of human infection of bird flu in Turkey, eight have been cured completely so far. Four have died - however, three of them died before Turkish authorities had time to react properly.

Early detection seems to be a crucial ingredient in helping a patient's survival. The two children who have just been discharged from hospital had been swiftly taken to hospital by their parents as soon as symptoms began to appear. The parents had spotted their children playing with a pair of plastic gloves that had been used to handle a bird that had died of avian influenza.

Bird flu = Avian Influenza.
