Twelve more people are suspected of being infected with the H5N1 bird flu strain in Northern Iraq, say authorities there. The affected area is Kurdistan, near the Turkish border.
Authorities are starting to cull poultry and birds in the area. They say they have so far killed over half a million birds - about half of all farm birds in areas north of Sulaimaniya by Lake Dukan, and in Raniya.
Kurdish Deputy Prime Minister, Imad Ahmed said the total number of humans suspected of being infected with bird flu (H5N1) now stands at twelve.
A girl of 15 and her uncle died a few days ago in northern Iraq - it was confirmed they both died as a result of infection of the H5N1 bird flu virus strain. A 54 year old woman is critically ill in hospital with probably bird flu.
Iraq is now the seventh country to report human cases of bird flu since 2003 - the first country was Viet Nam.

Bring our troops home NOW
posted by DeRenard on 31 Jan 2006 at 8:20 pmIf half million birds have been killed in Iraq from 1-17 to 1-31 and the one confirmed case has now grown to 12 suspected cases, Americans should insist Bush get this one right: Bring our troops and media home RIGHT NOW and hope and pray none of them bring this home. The longer our troops stay there, the bigger the risk Avian flu will be in the US sooner. We can't afford to wait until Iraq has its insurgency under control or its government fully functioning, it will be too late.
Now USA is scared
posted by Donald Baird on 1 Feb 2006 at 5:10 pmThe mess in Iraq is the USA's fault. You should have thought of that before you destabilized the place.
Now the European Union and World Health Organization have to send bird flu teams while the Americans are scared they may get infected before an insurgency comes.
There is more to bravery than invading little countries with huge weapons and fast planes.
Bravery means taking responsibility for your actions. If you are worried about an insurgency, you should have thought of that beforehand - if you didn't, you should not have invaded them.
In the UK we accept we are partly responsible for what is happening in Iraq. Nobody, absolutely nobody here, would consider leaving Iraq now - because the state it is in is our fault and our responsibility.
