Indian authorities have confirmed that H5N1 (bird flu) infected birds have been found in the west of the country. A massive cull is being organised in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus.
The infection of birds in India probably involves tens of thousands of birds, say authorities. Humans are being admitted to hospital with bird flu like symptoms - whether or not they also have bird flu remains to be seen (awaiting test results).
The confirmed bird flu (among birds) cases were found in poultry farms in Navapour, western India. All poultry within a one and a half mile radius of the infected farm are being slaughtered. Anees Ahmed, Maharashtra's Minister for Animal Husbandry said a total of half a million birds will be culled in the area.
Local officials say more than 30,000 birds have perished as a result of bird flu in the area around Navapur. All birds near the infected area, but further from the 1.5 radius, will be vaccinated.
