According to a new study carried out in Norway and the USA, if you are a man in your fifties you are more likely to have a better sex life than a man in his thirties. In fact, men in their fifties seem to have as satisfying a sex life as men in their twenties.
You can read about this study in BJU International.
Researchers from Norway and the USA studied details on 1,185 men, aged 20-79. They found that older men do have more problems with lower sex drive and erectile dysfunction (impotence). But men in their fifties seemed more satisfied than most people have realised.
In the study, men had to answer a postal questionnaire, in which they had to rate their satisfaction with their sex life. If a respondent ticked on a number 4, his sex life was good, ticking a number 1 meant his sex life was bad.
The scores went as follows:
Sexual Satisfaction
-- Men in their twenties: 2.79
-- Men in their thirties: 2.55
-- -- Men in their fifties: 2.77
-- Men over their sixties: 2.46
-- Men in their seventies: 2.14
Scores for sex drive and good erections went steadily down with age.
It seems that although men experience less sexual function as they get older, they do not necessarily experience less satisfaction.
Some psychologists suggest that a man in his fifties is more adjusted to what he wants out of life and is less hung up about this - perfomance anxiety is less of a problem for a man in his fifties when compared to a man in his thirties.
