Authorities in China have confirmed a nine-year-old girl from the Zhejiang province has died of H5N1 bird flu, bringing the number of human bird flu deaths in the country to ten.

The Xinhua news agency announced that the girl died on Monday, 6th March, 2006.

The girl had had contact with sick chickens while visiting relatives in Anhui province. She developed a fever, and then pneumonia.

Whether the number of human deaths in China is beginning to accelerate remains to be seen. Two people have died of bird flu infection in the country over the last week - the nine-year-old girl and a 32-year-old man from Guangdong province, southern China.
