Chinese health authorities have confirmed the country’s 16th case of H5N1 avian flu (bird flu) infection. A 29-year-old female migrant worker, from Shanghai, became ill and was hospitalized on 15 March. She died six days later.

This is the first human to have become infected with bird flu (H5N1) in Shanghai, where no poultry infection outbreaks have been reported since February, 2004.

The woman’s family and close friends have been placed under investigation. How she got infected is still unknown.

Of the 16 humans who have been infected in China, 11 have died.
