Authorities in Egypt have confirmed their twelfth human case of bird (avian) flu infection with the H5N1 strain. The patient comes from Minufiyah (a northern governorate).
The 18-year-old woman began to show bird-flu like symptoms on April 5 and was hospitalised on 11 April. Doctors say she is in a stable condition.
Authorities say she had extensive physical contact with sick birds. There are no signs of infection among her immediate family and close friends.
Confirmation was made after samples were tested for H5N1 at Egypt's Central Public Health Laboratory and also at the US Naval Medical Research Unit 3, Cairo.
Of the twelve humans who have become infected with H5N1 so far in Egypt, 5 have recovered and are no longer in hospital, four are still in hospital and three have died.
