A five-year-old girl, Kai Leigh Harriott, wheelchair bound after a bullet paralyzed her three years ago, forgave the man who shot her and told him what he had done to her was wrong. She did this to his face, in court.

After breaking down and crying, the girl picked up a glass of water, took a sip, and said to Anthony Warren 'What you done to me was wrong ... but I still forgive him.' Anthony Warren had pleaded guilty to shooting her, shots that paralyzed the girl.

Kai Lee Harriot used to be able to walk. She had been a healthy little girl. Almost three years ago she had been sitting on a porch. Warren had had an argument with some people who lived in the first floor of the house (a building which housed three families). He returned at about 11pm and shot three times at the house. His target had been the person he had had an argument with - not Kai. Kai, three years' old at the time, was hit by one of the bullets. She had been sitting there on the porch with her older sister.

The bullet shattered the little girl's spine. From that moment onwards she lost all movement from the chest down.

Warren was sentenced to 13-15 years in prison and 5 years' probation.

Hopefully, one day, as medicine makes new headways in neuroscience, Kai may eventually be able to get up from her wheelchair and walk again, unaided. I am humbled by her benevolence. She will always be an example to me of how good and untainted a human can be. I am 50 and she is five - yet she is light-years ahead of me.

It's amazing

No, this is not about God. What it is all about is nipping crime at the bud. This guy had fully intended to kill someone and his reason for wanting to do that was probably assinine. We need to provide better education and attention to young children, The government won't for preventative measures but don't seem to mind paying zillions of dollars to lock them up. Prison is no a lucrative business, with private corporations building the prisons and staffing them,so they have a vested interest in not helping the prisoners rehabilitate themselves. Although I advocate paying more attention to crime when the offenders are young, I do feel that this scum bag should have receieved a much harsher sentence. 40 years to life. His action was premeditated, he planned to kill, he just hit the wrong person. Now a little girl is denied all the pleasures of growing up, playing with her friends, running through the wildflowers, chasing her puppy and perhaps even the chance of having a family.

I think the prison should figure out just what his caloric needs are and feed him just that much. Make the food as bland as possible and don't let him buy candy bars or other food from the commissary. Everyday he should be required to write, but not necessarily mail, a letter to his victim. He should also have to pay 50% of his earnings once he gets out of prison to the girl every month as long as he lives. Probably wouldn't hurt to remove his mattress from his cell at 7 am and not return it until 9 pm.

She forgave him and that is nice for her. I do not recall reading that he said he was sorry. I would make him sorry--even if was only for himself

That opinion stains the purity of the little girl's forgiveness. "Placing the onus on the offender, and using God to jump on the bandwagon.'

I am sure the little girl did this purely from her heart.

Don't hijack this event - you religious parasites!! Don't taint it - please!! Take it for what it is, pure human goodness. Find your own ways to forgive, don't use her for your own ends!!

Forgiveness and Repentance

posted by Linda Amstutz on 15 Apr 2006 at 11:52 am

The little 5 y.o. paralyzed girl forgave the man who shot her. God's Word tells us to do that. Once you forgive, it heals your own bitter spirit, and you can go on living without the bitterness, which makes you ill. It's part of the healing process for your own spirit, plus it places the responsibility back on the offender, who many times repents of their sins, because of the grace shown to them. That's what it's all about-- forgiveness and repentance before a Holy God our Father.
