Indonesia's Ministry of Health confirmed to the World Health Organization that its 33rd human to become infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus strain was a 30-year-old man from greater Jakarta.

The man became ill on 17 April and was hospitalized on 21 April. He died on 26 April.

Authorities are still trying to determine how the man became infected. It is known he lived near an area where backyard poultry was kept.

So far, 33 people have become infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus strain in Indonesia, of which 25 have died.
