SequenceBase Corporation and FIZ Karlsruhe are pleased to announce that a preview of The USPTO Genetic Sequence Database, USGENE will be shown for the first time to attendees at the Patent Information Users Group Meeting (PIUG) in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 21, 2006. This database, USGENE, will be available on STN International (The Scientific & Technical Information Network) in the summer of 2006. This comprehensive database, USGENE, is an entirely new resource for freedom-to-operate, prior-art, validity and patent infringement searches. The database has been loaded for worldwide access at FIZ Karlsruhe, the European Service Center of STN.

USGENE covers all peptide and nucleic acid sequences from the published applications and issued patents of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), from 1982 to date. USGENE is the new unparalleled resource for freedom-to-operate, prior-art, validity and infringement patent sequence searches; competitive analysis of organizations with biosequence patents; current awareness alerts (SDIs) from the very latest USPTO sequence data.

USGENE offers three advanced sequence searching methods; NCBI BLAST®, the FastA-based GETSIM, and GETSEQ for fragment or motif sequence queries. The database also provides fully searchable organism name, sequence length, publication sequence identity number (SEQ ID NO) and feature tables for modifications and other features.

USGENE database includes extensive bibliographic and text search options, including publication title, abstract, full patent claims, patent assignees at issue, full inventor names, plus the complete set of publication, application and parent case WIPO/PCT numbers and dates.

Single-click full-text links from USGENE sequence records to USPTO original documents on the web are available to all searchers using STN Express® with Discover! and STN on the Web.

"Our new USGENE database provides a unique searchable combination of biological data - sequences, organism names, molecule types, sequence ID numbers and feature tables - with the original USPTO publication text, especially the full-patent claims." commented Martin Goffman, President and CEO, SequenceBase Corporation. "We are delighted to partner with FIZ Karlsruhe to offer STN® patent sequence searchers first access to this new database - an entirely new resource for U.S. freedom-to-operate, prior-art, validity and patent infringement searches."

"The unique combination of USGENE with prestigious STN® patent sequence databases DGENE (GENESEQ), PCTGEN and REGISTRY, gives life-science intellectual property professionals the ability to make business critical decisions with greater certainty than was possible before," said Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe. "FIZ Karlsruhe recognizes that the creation of the USGENE database by the SequenceBase Corporation is a truly innovative concept, and we join with our customers to welcome its arrival on STN® with great enthusiasm."
