UroToday.com - Abstract 128: While androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer is known to result in poor glycemic control, the exact risk of de novo diabetes mellitus has not well defined.

Furthermore, screening and prevention strategies for patients starting on ADT have not been established.

Kincade and colleagues from Memphis reviewed their experience with 394 patients who received ADT either with LHRH agonists or orchiectomy. The risk of de novo diabetes mellitus was 11.4%, which was significantly greater in patients with a history of obesity.

Furthermore, in patients with pre-existing diabetes mellitus, worsening glycemic control (> 5% increase in HbA1c) developed in 42% percent of patients. Vitamin D supplementation was found to be associated with a protective effect.
