Chinese authorities have confirmed that a 31-year-old truck driver from Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, near Hong Kong, is infected with the bird flu H5N1 virus strain. The Ministry of Health says this is the country's 19th confirmed human case of bird flu infection.
The patient showed bird flu like symptoms on June 9. He is alive, in hospital, in a critical condition with severe pneumonia.
Experts are still investigating the source of the infection. The man had frequently visited a live poultry market before becoming ill. Whether the market is the source of his infection is still not clear. There have been no reported cases of infected birds in the market or its surrounding area.
Of the 19 human who have been infected in China, nine have died.
