A 17-year-old man from Thap Khlo district of Phichit province, northern Thailand, developed bird-flu like symptoms on 15 July, was taken to hospital on 20 July and died four days later, say officials from the Ministry of Public Health.
Five days before symptoms began to show the man had been burying the carcasses of dead chickens. This case coincides with an H5N1 outbreak in animals in the province.
Authorities say control measures have been implemented to stem the spread of the outbreak. Human surveillance has been stepped up.
None of the young man's relatives and close friends has symptoms of respiratory illness, say local healthcare officials.
This is the first reported case of human bird flu infection in Thailand this year.
