An Indonesian woman has become the 55th person in the country to die of H5N1 bird flu infection, according to the Ministry of Health. The 67-year-old woman was from West Java province. She developed bird flu like symptoms on October 3rd, was taken to hospital on October 7th, and died on October 15th.

During the last four days three people have died of bird flu infection in Indonesia.

An 11-year-old boy became ill on October 2nd, was hospitalized on October 5th, and died on October 14th. He was from South Jakarta. He had been in contact with infected chickens.

A 27-year-old woman became ill on October 8th, went to hospital on October 12th, and died on October 13th. An investigation is still underway to find out whether she had had contact with infected birds.

So far, 72 humans have become infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus strain in Indonesia.
