Foster City, Calif.-based Gilead Sciences on Thursday said that it has received a subpoena from the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco seeking documents involving the company's "marketing and medical education programs" for its antiretroviral drugs Emtriva, Truvada and Viread, the Contra Costa Times reports. According to the Times, officials with the attorney's office have said they are increasingly focusing on product-marketing abuses by pharmaceutical firms, such as the practice of promoting a drug for purposes not specifically approved by FDA, known as off-label marketing. "Gilead intends to comply with the U.S. attorney's subpoena and to cooperate in any related investigation," the company said in a statement. Gilead spokesperson Amy Flood and Luke Macaulay, a spokesperson with the attorney's office, declined to comment further on the matter (Johnson, Contra Costa Times, 12/9).
