The New York Downtown Hospital is planning to carry out the first ever successful uterus transplant. The procedure had been attempted six years ago in Saudi Arabia, but failed. Women who do not have a uterus, such as those who underwent a hysterectomy, would possibly have the chance to conceive. The transplant might also help women who have a damaged or defective uterus.
The medical team is currently screening women who want to have children but are unable to.
Team leader, Giuseppe Del Priore M.D., M.P.H., said that the desire to have a child is a tremendous driving force for many women. He believes he and his team may be able to help many women fulfill "this very basic desire".
Even though such a transplant is not planned for the very near future, Del Priore told The Washington Post that a transplant may be attempted towards the end of this year.
Several experts have voiced concern about carrying out such a procedure before further animal tests are done. Others wonder whether the risks may be greater than the benefits for both the woman and the fetus.

I Want A Uterus Transplant
posted by Michelle Broussard on 27 Jan 2007 at 10:23 pmI'm very interested in having the transplant done. I had a complete hysteroctomy when I was 26 years old. I did have 2 kids with my deceased husband. But now I'm engaged to be married to a man that has no kids of his own. I've always felt bad that I couldn't give him any kids, now there's hope. If you could please call my home to discuss this more or send me information in the mail I would greatly appriciate it.

Uterus Transplant
posted by Lory Laughter on 24 Apr 2007 at 7:37 pmI'd be willing to donate my uterus. I have 4 birth children and 5 adopted children. Although I am only 43, my children are mostly grown and on their own. I have no desire for more children of my own. I had my tubes tied in 1991. I carried all my children to term (and beyond). My uterus has always been healthy and I would be willing to give it to another woman to help her conceive.

posted by Antoinette Dawn Roberts on 17 Jun 2007 at 8:16 pm
Hello Mrs.Lory Laughter I'm 25 years old I had to have a emergency complete hysterectomy when I was 22 years old due to health problems. I have 2 children by my previous husband. And now I just got remarried and my husband's in the military. But he has no kids and I have been researching ways to give my husband the baby he wants and to make our lives even happier, it hurts when my 6 year old daughter wants a sister or brother and I cant give it to her I feel that I'm letting my daughter and husband down. I feel that my husband is serving in the military for our lives and the least that I can do is to grant him his dream which is to have a baby with me. So if u could PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE contact me ASAP.

Hysterectomy at 32
posted by Annette Ramirez on 7 Jul 2010 at 12:10 amI am interested in the uterus transplant...and have been trying to follow updates since I had my hysterectomy some 10 years ago. I had massive fibroids that could not be removed w/ removing the uterus. I do not have any children.
This would be a blessing.
