The awardees were selected by the AACAP's Diversity and Culture Committee after a competitive process.

Brian Slater, a medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is mentored by Oscar Bukstein, M.D., and was chosen for his project, "TriState Node of the Clinical Trials Network (CTN) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse."

Ivorie Drayton, a medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina, is mentored by Himanshu Upadhyaya, M.B.B.S, M.S., and was chosen for her project, "Combined Pharmaco/Behavioral Treatment for Adolescent Smokers."

The AACAP Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Research Fellowship is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and offers a unique opportunity for minority medical students to explore a research career in substance abuse, gain valuable work experience, and meet leaders in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. The fellowship opportunity provides up to $3,500 for 12 weeks of research training under a child and adolescent psychiatrist researcher and mentor.

This program has increased the number of practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatricians, neurologists, and general psychiatrists with an understanding of substance use disorders.
