The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) has been selected for the "Honor Roll" of best hospitals in America by U.S.News & World Report, as featured in its July 25th issue. The publication's prestigious annual ranking of hospitals places HUP as one of only 18 hospitals chosen from the approximately 5,400 facilities surveyed.

"Recognition by U.S.News & World Report confirms the extraordinary commitment and superior level of performance by our dedicated teams of physicians, nurses, technologists, and staff at HUP," said Garry Scheib, Executive Director of HUP and Chief Operating Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). "There are many great hospitals in the United States, and being selected as one of the best is an honor to be shared by everyone who works at HUP."

The survey evaluated approximately 5,462 hospitals around the country based on their reputation among a group of randomly selected, board-certified physicians. The survey also considered such factors as mortality rate and factored in measures specific to each of the 16 specialties included in the survey.

In total, HUP's expertise was ranked in 13 of the adult medical specialties.

"It is especially gratifying to note that the survey identifies HUP as best in the Philadelphia region in 11 specialty areas," said Ralph W. Muller, Chief Executive Officer of UPHS. "We are pleased that this award recognizes our institution-wide commitment to the highest standards in patient care, as well as to biomedical research and medical education. Our hospital's ability to focus on excellence while integrating these three goals into our daily operations helps makes us one of America's best."

The University of Pennsylvania Health System is dedicated to high-quality patient care and service, advancing medical science through research, and educating the next generation of leaders in medicine. http://pennhealth.com
