An updated information leaflet on waste disposal and an accompanying standard operating procedure (SOP) for the disposal of medicines in England and Wales have been produced by the NPA and are both available to download on the NPA members' website. The leaflet explains what pharmacists must do to ensure that waste material from your pharmacy is disposed of properly and the SOP details the process.
Waste disposal legislation is being constantly updated by the EU. The NPA Waste Disposal Leaflet explains what must be done to ensure that waste material from pharmacies is properly accepted, stored, transported and disposed of. It also provides a waste checklist and gives a quick guide to waste forms and licenses.
The SOP sets out the standards and guidance that must be adhered to when disposing of medicines. The SOP also contains a prompt card for staff to use when accepting returned medicines from patients. Writing a SOP allows pharmacists to review the actual process of medicines disposal in their pharmacy and ensure all the requirements are met.
Ruth Wakeman, NPA Information Department Manager said: "The new leaflet and SOP on waste disposal help provide all the necessary information in a straightforward format so as to help our members adhere to all the latest regulations. There have been many changes in the guidance and regulations affecting waste disposal and it is important for members to ensure that they are complying with the new requirements"
