Lupus Foundation Of America Issues A Call For Nominations For The 2007 Evelyn V. Hess Award

Evelyn V. Hess, M.D., MACP, MACR, is an internationally known expert in lupus, with a special interest in the area of the environmental aspects of lupus. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to lupus research over the course of her long career, the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA) established the Evelyn V. Hess Award, given annually to a clinical or basic researcher whose body of work has advanced understanding of the pathophysiology, etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, or treatment of lupus.
Candidates for this award must meet the following criteria:
-- Academic degree of M.D. or Ph.D.
-- A career of achievement in basic or clinical research in lupus.
-- Academic appointment at the level of Associate Professor or above.
Nomination packages must include 1) a nominating letter describing the candidate's contributions to lupus research, 2) a seconding letter, and 3) the candidate's CV. Please submit all materials to the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., Susan Drinan-Bowes, Manager, Education & Research, 2000 L St. NW, Suite 710, Washington, DC 20036, or via email to bowes@lupus.org. Nominations and supporting materials must be received by the LFA no later than September 14, 2007.
The award will be presented at an honorary reception during the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Boston, MA in November, 2007.
About Dr. Evelyn Hess
Dr. Hess began her training at University College in Dublin, Ireland, and completed her internships and residencies in London. She began teaching at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine, in the Division of Internal Medicine/Immunology, in 1965 and was the director of the Division of Immunology from 1965 to 1995. She is the recipient of a College of Medicine endowed chair and has held the McDonald Professorship at the University since 1969. She was awarded the University of Cincinnati Drake Medal in 2001 for distinguished service to the College. The University has also recognized her by establishing a fund for the Evelyn V. Hess Chair in Rheumatology to support faculty and fellow salaries for research and education in rheumatic diseases in the Division of Immunology/Rheumatology at the College of Medicine.
Dr. Hess is a Master of both the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology, and the Royal Society of Medicine. She serves as Governor of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians and is an active member of many national and international societies, including the Pan American League of Associations for Rheumatology, the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the International Society of Immuno-Pharmacology. She speaks at numerous professional meetings each year and continues to publish papers and chapters, teach full-time, see patients, and stay involved in a number of clinical research projects.
