The GDC is seeking higher education professionals to oversee its new examination for overseas dentists.

Following the launch of the new Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) the GDC is recruiting:

A Chair to help establish and lead its new Overseas Registration Examination Board (OREB) which will ensure the successful delivery of the ORE, and A panel of external examiners to monitor how the exam is run by the GDC's external suppliers.

The GDC is inviting applications from higher education professionals for the position of Chair of the new OREB. The Chair will head up the OREB and deliver its work programme, contributing expert knowledge of examination governance and quality assurance.

The successful applicant, who must have knowledge of UK higher education but not necessarily dentistry, will be selected following an interview process. Once in post, the Chair will take an active role in recruiting the other OREB members.

Applications are also sought from registered dental professionals with recent undergraduate dental examining experience to join a panel of external examiners. The GDC is inviting applications from dental professionals who are in current employment or have been retired for less than two years and have a working knowledge of the GDC's document, The First Five Years: A Framework for Undergraduate Dental Education and modern assessment methods. The examiners will be selected following an interview process.

GDC President Hew Mathewson commented:

"Now that we have launched our new exam for overseas dentists, the OREB has an important role in providing governance and quality assurance. We are looking for someone with knowledge and experience of the UK higher education field to lead the OREB.

We are also searching for a team of external examiners to ensure the processes are sound, rigorous, and operated fairly and in accordance with GDC policies and regulations.

This is an opportunity for individuals to make a significant contribution to the public protection work of the GDC and play their part in maintaining high standards of dentistry in the UK."

More information on the ORE and the recruitment process for both positions, along with the role profiles, details of pay and application forms, is available from the GDC's website. Go to _ http://www.gdc-uk.org and click on 'Work for us'. Applications for the Chair of the Board must be returned by 5pm, Monday 17 September and for the External Examiners by 5pm, Monday 1 October. Keep an eye on the GDC website for adverts for the other members of the OREB in the future.

The ORE has replaced the International Qualifying Examination as the statutory examination which tests the clinical skills and knowledge of overseas dentists (non-EEA) who wish to apply for registration to practise in the UK.
