A New Promoting Choices training course for professionals working with teenage parents from national sexual health charity fpa is being rolled-out across England. As part of the initiative to reduce teenage pregnancy, Positive Choices focuses on reducing repeated unplanned pregnancy in the under 18s.

Promoting Choices splits into two separate events. The first is a one-day course for health professionals such as midwives, health visitors and nurses. The second is a two-day course for any professional working with young parents and sexual health. Promoting Choices focuses on supporting young parents in all areas of sexual health including contraception, planning a pregnancy and making informed choices.

Subsidised by the Teenage Pregnancy Unit, professionals attending Promoting Choices will leave the course armed with information, confidence and the right approaches to use when discussing preventing pregnancy and sexual health with teenage mums and dads.

Road shows start on the 18th September 2007 and run until the 4th March 2008 in nine locations in England: Wolverhampton, Torbay, Hartlepool, Manchester, Eastbourne, Norfolk, Derby, Leeds and London.

Claire Fanstone, Training Manager, fpa said: "We know that teenage parents are not getting the information they need about contraception and are either not using contraception or using a method that doesn't suit them. This is resulting in high levels of second pregnancy, many of which are unplanned. Promoting Choices will help attendees work confidently with teenage parents and give them the support and advice they need to make informed choices about their own sexual health."

fpa (Family Planning Association) is the only registered charity working to improve the sexual health and reproductive rights of all people throughout the UK.
