The latest special issue of Physical Therapy Reviews (Volume 12, no. 3) deals with musculoskeletal pain and features a Guest Editorial from Professor Jennifer Klaber Moffett of the Institute of Rehabilitation, University of Hull, UK.
The range of papers covers a wide spectrum of the latest evidence and ideas surrounding the diagnosis, understanding and treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Moffett notes that our understanding of pain has advanced considerably over the past decade, mainly due to improved imaging techniques such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This has allowed us to visualise activity in the brain of a person who is in pain and see exactly which areas are affected and to what extent. The technique is useful for biologists, psychologists and also for inquiring clinicians who wish to better understand their patients' pain. She hopes that the papers will "require us to consider carefully our current approach to helping our patients with pain and perhaps more importantly consider adapting our own practice in the light of emerging evidence."
Nine international papers consider the biology of pain, pain from a psychological point of view and the management of pain with physical therapy.
The issue is available as a stand-alone publication as well as to regular subscribers to the journal. The issue costs £15/$25 for individuals or £37/$60 for institutions, and can be purchased via Ingenta, where full contents can also be viewed. Please visit this link.
