Thrombosis Summit 2007 In Boston, MA

A staggering 300,000 people die each year in the U.S. due to blood clots in the veins - greater than the number of people who die each year of AIDS, breast cancer, or automobile accidents combined.

The North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to thrombosis treatment and prevention awareness, is co-sponsoring a free educational symposium entitled, "Thrombosis Summit 2007," to be held Saturday, September 29, in Boston, Massachusetts.

This 1-day symposium emphasizing Clinical Science and professional education is intended to provide a concise, state-of-the-art overview of prophylaxis measures and critical developments in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of thrombotic disorders. Focused sessions in 5 key areas include 1) translational research, 2) clinical research, 3) prevention and education, 4) public policy, and 5) advocacy.

Special guest lecturers include:

-- Melanie Bloom, Coalition to Prevent DVT. Widow of former NBC war correspondent David Bloom, who succumbed to massive pulmonary embolism on the outskirts of Baghdad.

-- Ajay K. Kakkar, MD, PhD. Barts and the London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry; Consultant Surgeon, St. Bartholomews Hospital, London; Director, Designate, Thrombosis Research Institute; Professor of Surgical Sciences; Department of Surgical Oncology and Technology; Imperial College, Hammersmith Campus, London, UK.

-- Acting Surgeon General, Kenneth P. Moritsugu, MD, MPH, RADM, USPHS. Since August 2006, Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu has served as the Acting Surgeon General.

-- Susan B. Shurin, MD, Deputy Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Shurin was Professor of Pediatrics and Oncology at Case Western Reserve University and Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. Dr. Shurin is currently leading NHLBI efforts to enhance the clinical research program.

-- Roughly 380,000 people develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which occurs in the inner veins of the leg.
