Hitting the road in the autumn is not something the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) generally does. Normally events are held on its campuses at the University of London, the largest, oldest and most prestigious veterinary school in the United Kingdom. As a way of encouraging budding veterinary surgeons, nurses and scientists to apply from further afield though, this year is markedly different.

Abbey College Manchester is the only venue in North West England that has been selected to host the RVC's road-show. Students in their final year of A Levels can find out all about the different veterinary courses being offered at the RVC, as well as rubbing shoulders with the leading teaching and research specialists in the world. The recent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth and bird-flu highlight the increasing need for more vets and veterinary scientists to help control infectious animal diseases in the UK.

Taking place on Tuesday September 18th, it kicks off at 3:00 and will include presentations on different disciplines, including veterinary medicine, science, nursing and pathology delivered by experts to give students a unique insight into what is available - something they would never have the opportunity to get unless travelling down to London.

Jenny Thomas, Principal at Abbey College Manchester, says: " It's a real coup for us to be chosen for this, the only RVC event in the North West this year. In this age of arts and business subjects becoming ever more popular, our students still have a strong tradition of gaining entry to veterinary schools, including top ones such as University of London. This year alone 9 of our students have succeeded in getting places. It is perhaps our strong association in this field that has impressed the RVC".

Julia Hewett from the RVC comments: "The idea behind our road-shows, especially this one in Manchester, is to widen participation and to give students from different areas of the country the chance to see what veterinary and biomedical science involves and how exciting it is."

Abbey College Manchester cordially invited to send a reporter / photographer to this event on Tuesday September 18th, 2007. It starts at 3:00 p.m. with individual presentations commencing at 3:30 p.m.

The event will be held at Abbey College Manchester, whose Principal, Jenny Thomas, can be contacted for further information on (0161) 817 2700 or admin@abbeymanchester.co.uk

Abbey College, Manchester offers GCSEs and A-levels to students taking them for the first time, or to those embarking on retakes. It is one of four Abbey A-Level Colleges, the others being in Birmingham, Cambridge and London.

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is the UK's first and largest veterinary school and a constituent College of the University of London. The College is one of the leading veterinary research centres in Europe and received 5 out of 5 in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. It also provides support for veterinary and related professions through its three referral hospitals, diagnostic services and continuing professional development courses.
