The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the regulatory body for UK nurses and midwives, has announced Nancy Kirkland as the new President of its governing Council.

The result of the ballot of the 23 voting members of the Council was received yesterday.

Commenting on the result, Nancy said,

"I am delighted to have been elected President of the Council. I look forward to working with my colleagues in shaping the future of the NMC and continuing to protect public safety and provide support and guidance to all of our nurses and midwives across the UK."

NMC Chief Executive, Sarah Thewlis said,

"I would like to welcome Nancy into her new position within the Council. As the NMC is introducing many new changes, I have no doubt that Nancy has the commitment, experience and skills necessary to lead the NMC as the UK's largest health regulator."

The President's key responsibilities are to provide leadership skills to the Council, ensuring proper governance of the NMC and to be an ambassador for the Council at national, European and international level.

With many years of experience working in the NHS, Nancy brings considerable knowledge of best practice in nursing to the Presidential role. Nancy holds the position of registrant nurse member for Scotland. Nancy has worked in practice development, quality assurance and strategic development, ensuring that she is highly skilled, experienced and familiar with concerns across the register. Following a period of secondment at the Scottish Executive, Nancy is currently working as Project Manager for the Associate Director of Workforce Development. On top of her highly regarded nursing and midwifery training, Nancy also holds qualifications in Biological Sciences, Computing and is due to complete a Bachelor of Law in June 2008.

1. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the UK regulator for two professions, nursing and midwifery. The primary purpose of the NMC is protection of the public. It does this through maintaining a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses eligible to practice within the UK and by setting standards for their education, training and conduct. Currently the number of registrants exceeds 682,000. The Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 (The Order), sets out the NMC's role and responsibilities.
