Grand National-winning jockey Bob Champion will be talking to representatives from the manufacturing industry about his experiences in beating ill health when he addresses a health and safety conference in Mid Wales in October.

The theme of the conference hosted by the Mid Wales Manufacturing Group and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be "Make it for Life," promoting the idea that good health is good business, and Mr Champion will be talking about his experience in overcoming the odds to ride the winner of the world's most famous steeplechase in 1981.

Other speakers at the event include:

- Gerard Forlin, barrister who has acted in some of the most high profile cases in recent times, including the rail crashes at Southall, Paddington and Hatfield, and the Barrow in Furness legionnaires outbreak.

- Andy Threlkeld, European Safety Director for Kellogg's, who has transformed the safety regime since his appointment in 2006.

- Dr Les Smith, managing director of Health and Wellbeing UK, and a specialist in occupational health issues, having held senior positions in a number of high profile organisations.

Terry Rose, Director for HSE Wales, who is also scheduled to speak at the event said: "Bob Champion's experiences show how ill health can have serious consequences for an individual's career, and while he managed to overcome what seemed like impossible odds, not everyone who suffers ill health or injury through work are as fortunate.

"The exciting line up of speakers at this event represent a wide and diverse range of experience in health and safety management. What is more, health and safety is no longer viewed as a barrier to business success, but is now seen as an integral part of it."

As well as the presentations from the speakers, there will also be a range of exhibitors, including the Health and Safety Executive, on hand to provide advice and information on products and services available.

The event is sponsored by the Manufacturing Advisory Service, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Health and Safety Executive, and takes place on October 2nd at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells. The delegate rate is £39.50 (ex VAT). Details of how to book a place can be found here.
