Main Category: Health Insurance / Medical InsuranceArticle Date: 02 Oct 2007 - 9:00 PDT
The following are summaries of opinion pieces discussing health care reform.
- Froma Harrop, Houston Chronicle: "Many Canadians want their single-payer system opened to allow more private options. But it's hard to find a Canadian who would give up basic universal coverage," syndicated columnist Harrop writes in an opinion piece in the Chronicle. She concludes, "For families coping with serious illness, that guarantee can make the difference between tough times and total meltdown" (Harrop, Houston Chronicle, 9/24).
- Peter Brown, The Politico: "So far, none of [the presidential candidates] proposing fixes to the health care system have said how they would treat illegal immigrants, understanding the furor the issue would cause on the campaign trail," Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, writes in The Politico. He concludes, "Like all things political, in health care reform, the devil is in the details. And this is one detail that could be very difficult to work out (Brown, The Politico, 9/26).
- Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), The Politico: The U.S. needs "a fresh vision -- a 21st-century approach that transforms health care itself in a way that builds on our nation's most fundamental strengths," Ryan writes in The Politico. According to Ryan, reform must be comprehensive, "should be built on the principle of individual ownership, ... must provide health care security" and "must promote our international competitiveness (Ryan, The Politico, 9/26).
- John Clymer, Washington Times: "It's time that our lawmakers establish prevention as a priority in the nation's health reform debate," Clymer, president of the Partnership for Prevention, writes in a Times opinion piece. He adds, "We have suffered enough from preventable diseases that lead to more than half a million premature deaths and billions of excess costs each year (Clymer, Washington Times, 9/26).
