New York City Council Speaker Launches Yearlong, Citywide Health Outreach Campaign Targeting Women

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn on Monday at a news conference launched a yearlong, citywide health outreach campaign that targets women, the New York Daily News reports.

The campaign, called "N.Y.C. Women First," will sponsor community events and other activities monthly to increase women's awareness of specific health issues (Lombardi, New York Daily News, 10/2). In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign's first issue will be mammograms, the AP/Long Island Newsday reports. Other monthly topics scheduled include colon health, depression, diabetes, domestic violence, gynecological health, heart health, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, pregnancy health, safe sex and smoking (AP/Long Island Newsday, 10/1).

For this month, the campaign, assisted by Macy's, will inform women about how and when to schedule mammograms. Macy's announced that it will post signs in all of its women's dressing rooms in the city that aim to educate customers about the importance of regular breast cancer screening. The signs will read, "A friendly reminder. Talk to your doctor to schedule a breast exam and, if you're 40 or older, get your annual mammogram." Ed Goldberg, senior vice president of Macy's, said, "This small reminder can go a long way in saving women's lives" (New York Daily News, 10/2).
