American Journal Of Psychiatry Debuts "AJP In Advance"

After 164 years of publication as a monthly print edition, The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) is proud to introduce a new reader benefit that will speed the flow of peer-reviewed psychiatric research to psychiatrists, patients, and to the mental health community.

AJP, the official journal of the American Psychiatric Association, launched "AJP in Advance" a new section of the journal's website, http://www.ajp.psychiatryonline.org.

Twice each month (on the first and 15th, or the next business day), the journal will post new research articles online, prior to their appearance in the print edition of the journal. Content will be available through a new AJP in Advance icon on the website. Abstracts of articles will be freely available to the public with the same pay-per-view purchase options available for the journal's regular content. Journal subscribers will have access to PDFs of all AJP in Advance content.

The change to bimonthly online posting in advance of print is aimed at reducing the usual time needed to process manuscripts, from the initial submission by the author, to the actual printing of an article in AJP. That timeframe has been recently running six months to one year. Posting articles online ahead of print should reduce that timeframe by several months.

Rapid progress in psychiatric research has created the need for accelerated publication. AJP in Advance will not only allow the journal to address that need, it will help allow AJP to not only continue, but to expand, offering readers the high-impact psychiatric research they have become accustomed to.

"AJP in Advance will give psychiatrists access to new evidence on clinical issues as soon as possible, aiding decisions about patients, and facilitating rapid exchange of research findings among scientists investigating mental illness," noted AJP Editor in chief, Robert Freedman, M.D.
