MEDSURG Nursing: The Journal of Adult Health, recognized Allison P. Smith, BA, BSN, RN, and C-Change, a group comprising the nation's key cancer leaders, as well as Linda H. Yoder, PhD, MBA, RN, AOCN, FAAN, with the first Spirit of MEDSURG Nursing Award. The award recognizes the group's and authors' dedication to medical-surgical nursing education and patient care through their involvement in developing, writing and supporting the "Cancer: Conquering and Caring" column in the journal.

The column, sponsored by an educational grant from C-Change, debuted in February 2005 and is a regular feature in MEDSURG Nursing. "Cancer: Conquering and Caring" reports the latest information on cancer screening, prevention, smoking cessation, clinical trials, treatments, resources for nurses and patients, and much more. Smith and Yoder are regular contributors to the column.

"C-Change and MEDSURG Nursing share the same goals: to enhance the knowledge and skills of medical-surgical nurses, to prevent and manage disease, and to work with patients and families to improve the health of adults," said MEDSURG Nursing Editor Dottie Roberts, MSN, MACI, RN, CMSRN, OCNS-C. "They truly embody the spirit of med-surg nursing."

The Spirit Award was presented during the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) 16th Annual Convention, October 24-29, 2007, in Las Vegas, NV. Smith is director, Cancer Research, Cancer Workforce, Annual Meetings at C-Change. Yoder is an associate professor and director, Nursing Systems Graduate Program and the Luci Baines Johnson Fellow in Nursing, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX.

The "Cancer: Caring and Conquering" column is made possible through an educational grant from C-Change, a Washington, DC-based, 501(3)c (not for profit), organization comprising the nation's key cancer leaders from government, business, and nonprofit sectors. These cancer leaders share the vision of a future where cancer is prevented, detected early, and cured or is managed successfully as a chronic illness.

The mission of C-Change is to leverage the combined expertise and resources of its members to eliminate cancer as a (major) public health problem at the earliest possible time. C-Change is both a forum and a catalyst for identifying issues and major challenges facing the cancer community and for initiating collaborative actions to complement the efforts of individual C-Change members.
