Shona Haslam, National Director, Asthma UK Scotland, says:

'Asthma UK Scotland is delighted with today's announcement and would like to congratulate all those who have worked so hard to bring the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow in 2014.

'We hope that hosting one of the world's major sporting events in Scotland will inspire thousands of children and young people across the country to start training now to win a gold medal on their home soil. And if there are any budding athletes out there with asthma who feel that their condition will somehow hold them back, they need only look at the UK's top female athlete, Paula Radcliffe, to see what someone with asthma can achieve.

'No matter where you choose to exercise - your back garden or Hampden Park - having asthma should not be a barrier so long as it is under control. Anyone with asthma wanting advice on how they can keep fit safely can call our Adviceline on 08457 01 02 03 and one of our asthma nurse specialists will be happy to help.'
