U.S. and Zambian officials recently signed a statement of collaboration with eight tourism companies to increase efforts to fight HIV/AIDS in Zambia, Xinhua News Agency reports. Under the partnership, tourism companies in Livingstone, Zambia, will provide HIV/AIDS services with funding from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. PEPFAR will encourage private companies in Livingstone to provide matching funds.
The partnership aims to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS, to encourage people to be tested for HIV and to seek early treatment with antiretroviral drugs. According to Xinhua News Agency, Zambia has received $340 million through PEPFAR since 2004 and will receive an additional $216 million this year (Xinhua News Agency, 11/11).
