Royal Hospital Chelsea Appoints Janet Husband As Commissioner, UK

The historic Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the Scarlet-coated Chelsea Pensioners, has appointed Janet Husband as a Commissioner.

Professor Dame Janet Husband DBE FMedSci FRCP, FRCR will serve on the Hospital's Board. She will provide advice and support to the Governor in guiding the management and development of the RoyalHospital, which cares for over 300 former soldiers. Appointed by the Crown on the advice of the Secretary of State for Defence, she will draw on experience in the medical profession.

Her appointment comes at an important time for the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which is currently raising £35million to build a new Infirmary and refurbish the Sir Christopher Wren designed Long Wards.

Until her retirement in September 2007, Professor Dame Janet Husband was Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at University of London Institute of Cancer Research and Consultant Radiologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. She continues to contribute to the Royal Marsden as a Special Independent Adviser to the Trust.

She was President of the Royal College of Radiologists, Vice Chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and is an elected member of the General Medical Council.

In 2002, she was awarded the OBE in recognition of her contribution to cancer imaging and in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2007, was appointed Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to medicine.

Professor Husband has published almost 300 scientific papers, books and media articles and has lectured internationally.

Built in 1692 to provide for old and injured soldiers , today it is home to approximately three hundred Pensioners, providing a stimulating living environment for its residents. Pensioners are usually 65 years or over and the average age is 83.

The Chelsea Pensioners' Appeal

The Chelsea Pensioners' Appeal is raising £35million to build and equip a new Infirmary (care home) and to modernise and upgrade the Chelsea Pensioners' sheltered living accommodation in the famous Sir Christopher Wren designed Long Wards.
